If we’re going to have to wear facemasks, let’s wear attractive and comfortable ones. I felt a need to make something that lets people reflect their personalities, as well as being comfortable and practical. The starting point is my collection of oddments of soft, close-woven cotton, which I’ve collected over the years. I've a wide range of patterns, which are both quirky and stylish. As I’ve only got enough of each material to make a few masks, they’re also very individual. You can buy them on my eBay page. I use these to sew pleated, two-sided masks which fit comfortably. |
Not everyone’s head is the same size, and a lot of us are growing more hair than usual, so I’ve designed them so that you can adjust the soft elastic in a variety of different ways. You can arrange it to fit behind your ears, behind your head, or crossed over, whichever is the most comfortable. |
To make sure it’s a good fit around your nose, they’ve all got an internal nose-wire which you can adjust. It’s made from PVC coated, tinned copper wire, so it won’t rust. It's folded over and covered with heat-shrink sleeving at the ends to make sure there’s nothing sharp and that it won’t damage the fabric. It can also stay in while you wash the mask. |
If you want extra layers, there’s a pocket in each mask where you can add an additional filter. I’ve got lots of different fabrics, but as I've only enough to make a few of each, they do sell out quickly.
